'DON'T SPECULATE ON ELECTORAL BOUNDARY REDELINEATION EXERCISE'

KUALA LUMPUR, Wed: The Election Commission (EC) today urged other parties not to make speculative statements on the electoral boundary redelineation exercise.

EC secretary Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said such statements would only confuse the people.

"Only the EC can issue detailed statements on the status of the electoral boundary redelilleation exercise," he said when contacted here.

He was asked to comment on a report in an English daily yesterday that Johor would have an additional 27 seats after the redelineation exercise which is said to be currently under way.

According to the report, which quoted a source from the state Umno, Johor would have an additional 18 state and nine parliamentary seats.

Wan Ahmad clarified that the exercise would only start officially in March next year.

The EC officers were now asked to prepare initial reports and collect data on the population distribution and new settlements, among others, he said.

He said the redelineation exercise must be completed within two years.

According to the client's charter on its website, the EC promised to complete the redelineation of the electoral boundaries within eight months and the division of the voting districts within four months. - Bernama
