EC MUST ENSURE SMOOTH ELECTION IN REMOTE AREAS

KUCHING: Sept 19 (Bernama) -- Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Alfred Jabu commended the Election Commission (EC) polling process in Ba'kelalan but said problems which caused the results to be postponed must not be allowed to recur.

The EC should consider measures like sending officers to remote sites two days before polling or extending the polling period to two days to overcome eventualities such as inclement weather, he added.

On Barisan Nasional's win in Ba'Kelalan, he said this showed that voters were matured as they paid no heed to the candidates' academic qualifications and instead focused on their development needs thus choosing the political party which could bring advancement.

The by-election was won by Nelson Balang Rining, 48, former Private Secretary to the late Datuk Dr Judson Sakai Tagal and Youth exco member of the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), who obtained 2,843 votes to beat Independent Baru Bian, 46, a lawyer, who got 1,391 votes.

The counting and results were postponed to today as the RMAF Nuri helicopter was unable to send the election officer, ballot boxes and ballot papers to Long Lellang polling centre yesterday due to inclement weather.

Long Lellang constituents cast their votes from 8am to 10.30am Sunday.
